Many in search of better economic prospects and some to escape Chinese communist rule. The world called them “freedom swimmers”. The South China Morning Post met an old freedom swimmer and a former member of the Hong Kong Marine Police whose job it was to catch them. But the boats traditionally used in Chinese waters since the Han dynasty (206BC-AD220) have all but disappeared. Only one authentic traditional sailing junk, the Dukling, is still sailing in Hong Kong today. Now even that last survivor is under threat from the Covid-19 pandemic, as passenger numbers crash to 90 per cent below normal, and few if any foreign tourists visit the city. The 1982 film imagined November 2019 as a dark, gritty, dystopian world dominated by inequality and technology, as it introduced a new generation of fans to cyberpunk culture. Bridging both science fiction and neo-noir genres, its cultural impact resonated in films ranging from The Matrix series to Ghost in the Shell. And while the Blade Runner story was supposed to be located in Los Angeles, the cult film drew massive influence from 1970s and 80s Hong Kong, referencing its distinctive streets and urban panoramas in nearly every scene. However, there is another crisis that has happened concurrently. The world has been suffering from a major shortage of semiconductors. These microchips are used in essentially all of our daily appliances and consumer electronics, including laptops, tablets, personal computers and video gaming consoles. Supply of basic chips and advanced integrated circuits have struggled to keep up with demand because of the disruption of global supply chains.
